How to get a lot more comments on your content...
Before we get into today's breakdown, If you’re celebrating, I hope you're all set for Christmas tomorrow!
Just finished decorating my place a few days ago - you can check out how it turned out here 😅
Now, let's talk about something that's especially relevant during the holidays - getting more engagement on your content.
More comments = more reach = more followers = more opportunities.
It's the social media food chain.
I've helped some big names get more comments on their content, and today, I'm sharing the goods with you.
Let’s get into it 👇
1) Ask Questions (But Not Rubbish Ones)
First off, forget those boring yes/no questions. You want the kind of questions that tap into people's experiences or expertise.
For example, take the caption of this video I uploaded a while back:
WHICH ONE OF THESE IS THE MOST ANNOYING TO YOU? 😡
These kinds of questions encourage people to share their opinions and back them with an experience they’ve had.
Everyone loves feeling like they know something worth sharing.
Try this:
Add a question within your actual content, not just the caption. You can either double up on the same question or ask one thing in your video and something else in your caption. Test both out and see which generates better results.
2) Bait
This is a cheeky one.
Leave a tiny 'mistake' in your post. Maybe it’s a grammatical error. People love feeling clever by spotting errors. It's a bit sneaky, but it works.
Important to not over do this one though. It only really works if you’re not known for making mistakes.
3) Start a Friendly Debate
Building on from the first point - as well as encouraging people to talk to you, get people talking to each other.
Pose a question that gets different opinions flowing.
For example:
This one had my audience split down the middle and got loads of mini-debates going.
I’m not saying start arguments, just have a bit of fun with lighthearted concepts.
The goal here is to turn your comment section into the place to be.
Get it right, and you'll have people coming back just to see what everyone's saying.
4) Use What the Platform Gives You
Each app has its own tricks - use them!
On Instagram, polls are great. They're quick, fun, and the algorithm loves 'em.
Here’s why they work:
Ease of Participation: Polls require minimal effort, making people more likely to engage. With just a tap, followers can voice their opinions, which is way less demanding than typing out a comment.
Instant Gratification: After voting, people can immediately see the results, satisfying their curiosity (big engagement driver).
FOMO Effect: Poll results update in real-time, this creates a small fear of missing out (FOMO) that can drive more participation. People want their voice heard and to see how their opinion compares to others.
Sense of Community: Polls create a shared experience among your followers. Seeing how their opinions align with others can strengthen their connection to your brand.
Make sure you:
Keep questions simple and relevant to your audience.
Follow up on poll results in your next posts or stories.
5) Show You're Actually Reading
Show that you actually care about what people say. Don't just chuck out a quick emoji. Write proper replies.
Even better, make content that responds to comments. Show the comment in your video. It's like saying, "Hey, I'm not just talking at you, I'm listening too."
6) Pin the Good Stuff
People love the notoriety of being pinned to the top of the comments.
When you pin a great comment at the top, you're
Making someone's day
Proving that you read your comments
Showing everyone what kind of comments you want more of (it reinforces positive behaviour)
7) Comment ‘x’ to get y
If you’ve got a free resource like an E-book, newsletter, or PDF cheat sheet - you can ask people to comment to receive a copy or link to join.
Here, you’re asking for an interaction with a clear value proposition.
{comment ‘x’ to get y}
Maybe they need to type a specific emoji/word or tag a mate.
These tend to work best as carousels or mini-essay style captions.
You’d ideally use your post to amplify a specific problem your audience has and then at the end, offer your free resource as the natural solution to that problem.
Just make sure your resource is valuable and will help build your authority.
8) Play the Long Game
Here's the truth - none of this works if you're not in it for the long haul.
Building engagement takes a lot of time, but it pays off.
People comment 'cause they want acknowledgement/validation/attention, either by you or by others.
So create a space where they feel heard and valued.
Perfect time to test these out with your holiday content - people are in a sharing mood this time of year!
Have a great Christmas if you’re celebrating - I’m back with another newsletter on Thursday.
