Stop making reels from scratch (do this instead)

Want to know a quick way to level up your Reels?

Templates.

Instagram added this feature last year and it's actually pretty useful.

Here's what's interesting about them - when you see a Reel that's blowing up, there's usually a pattern to how it's structured.

The timing of the clips, the way it flows, how it matches the audio.

Templates let you tap into these patterns that are already working, then just drop your own content in.

Let me show you how to find them:

First way is right in Instagram:

  • Go to Reels camera

  • Swipe to Templates

  • Pick one you like

  • Simple

Second way (I prefer this):

When you see a Reel you really like, check if it has a "Use template" sticker.

If it does, tap the three dots and hit "Use as template."

You'll get all the clip timings laid out for you.

Why Templates Help You Go Viral

It's pretty simple - the algorithm loves content that follows certain patterns.

When you use a template that's already performing well, you're basically giving the algorithm what it wants.

Think about it: if a specific format is getting pushed to the Explore page, using that same format gives your content a better chance too.

People are already familiar with the format.

Their brains recognise the pattern and stick around longer.

Plus, templates solve one of the biggest problems I see creators face - timing.

Getting your clips to hit perfectly with the music, knowing when to switch scenes, nailing those transitions.

Templates handle all of that for you.

Making Them Work

The thing about templates is you're not stuck with anything.

You can:

  • Switch up the music

  • Adjust the timings

  • Save the ones you like for later

And here’s something nice - if you make a Reel with three or more clips and your profile's public, other people can use your Reel as a template.

Kind of cool to think your format might catch on.

Wrapping Up

Templates are great to start with, but eventually you'll want to do your own thing.

Use them to learn what works, then make it your own.
