The top 6 Instagram questions I get asked (answered!)

Social media algorithms are changing all the time.

Speaking from experience, it’s not easy to keep up to date with the new best practices.

Having to bounce around the internet to find different bits of information is exhausting.

And I know you feel the same.

Last issue, you all voted to learn about Instagram algorithm changes.

So, I rolled up my sleeves, did the dirty work, and now I'm serving up a no-fluff guide to staying ahead on Instagram:

Q: "What's the most important thing to the Instagram algorithm?”

Instagram isn't just one algorithm - it's several working together.

Here's what you need to know:

Feed:

The algorithm prioritises posts based on your activity and interaction history. Timing and popularity matter. For instance, I've noticed my engagement peaks between 1 PM and 5 PM UK time, so that's when I schedule my posts.

Stories:

The Instagram algorithm is coded to log which pages you watch and engage with the most. This is one of its highest priority factors when deciding what to show on your feed. It also highly values DM responses, profile clicks, and complete views (where a video is watched all the way to the end).

Reels:

The algorithm places a high value on shares via DMs. It also considers audio, visuals, and overall engagement. Every view counts now, even replays, but remember that quality still trumps quantity.

Explore:

Here's the deal: The Explore page is Instagram's way of saying, "Hey, we think you'll like this." It's based on what's trending and your past interactions. But more importantly, it's your chance to reach a whole new crowd. So, make it count.,

Q: "Is it true that Instagram only cares about Reels now?"

Instagram's not just about Reels anymore. They've listened to user feedback and are giving more love to Stories and regular posts again. So, mix it up! Use Reels, Stories, static posts, and carousels. The key is to optimise each one for its specific algorithm.

Q: "Any technical tips for better performance?"

For static images, crop to 1080 x 1350 (4:5) to dominate the screen. And don't forget to add alt text for an SEO boost. Seriously, don't skip this! Add descriptive alt text to every image. It's not just for accessibility (though that's crucial) - it's also an SEO boost. Instagram's algorithm reads this text, helping your content show up in more searches.

When it comes to videos, crop to 9:16 and aim for 30-90 seconds. Keep it quick, engaging, and entertaining. The goal is to hold your audience's attention from start to finish.

For Stories, stick to 1080 x 1920 pixels. And keep videos under 15 seconds per segment for optimal viewing.

And last but not least, for IGTV, create a custom cover photo at 420 x 654 pixels. First impressions count!

Q: "How can I boost my post engagement without resorting to bots or fake likes?"

The key metrics to focus on are DM responses to Stories, profile clicks from Stories, Story completion rates, notifications turned on, and shares to friends or other Stories.

A pro tip: Use interactive features like polls, Q&As, and quizzes to boost engagement signals. These features not only increase interaction but also keep users on the platform longer, which Instagram loves.

Q: "Does Instagram favour accounts that are more 'social' on the platform?"

Instagram rewards content that keeps users on the platform. Your action plan should include responding to every like, comment, and DM, engaging with your followers' content, and creating a cycle of genuine interaction.

There's a person behind every username. Make them feel seen and valued. This not only boosts your engagement but also builds a loyal community around your brand.

Q: "How important are new features to the algorithm?"

Paid verification is now available, but weigh the cost against the potential algorithmic boost. Original content is king, so remove watermarks when repurposing. In Europe, there's a new chronological option, which could expand globally. This means timing your posts could become crucial again.

Your winning strategy for 2024 should focus on diversifying your content across all formats, optimising technical aspects, encouraging meaningful interactions (especially in DMs), using new features early and often, timing your posts strategically, crafting content specific to each section, and building genuine relationships with your audience.

The algorithm might change, but an authentic connection always wins.

Keep crushing it, and remember - you've got this!

Catch you on the 'gram,

Jeremy
