Your A-Z guide on the perfect Instagram carousel
We all know that Reels get a lot of attention on Instagram, but if you’re overlooking carousels, you’re missing out on a major opportunity.
The data shows that carousels have an average engagement rate of 3.1% per post, higher than both single images (2.6%) and video posts (2.9%).
So, worth putting some time into.
In today’s newsletter:
Why carousels can = virality
How Instagram gives your content another shot
How to tell your readers what to do (nicely)
Maxing out your 12 Slides
Let's get going 👇
Why Carousels Work
Instagram’s algorithm favours posts that keep users on the app longer.
Carousels do just that by allowing you to share multiple images or videos in one post. encouraging viewers to swipe through each slide.
It's simple math:
More content = More time spent on your post
More time spent = Algorithm love
Algorithm love = Better reach
Plus, the longer you can hold attention - the better your chances of someone interacting with your content, profile, website etc.
But there’s more.
Carousels can reappear in your followers’ feeds.
Didn't hook 'em with slide one?
Instagram might show them the second when they next log on.
This means you get two chances to capture attention.
Now, let's talk hooks.
I’ve said it before and I’m gonna keep saying it – your hook is EVERYTHING.
You could be the Da Vinci of Instagram, but if your first slide doesn't grab attention, you're post will get buried.
So here's the strategy:
Slide One: This is your first impression. It needs to be bold, intriguing, and compelling. If your first slide doesn’t captivate, you lose the viewer.
Slide Two: If they see your second slide in their feed, it’s another shot at capturing their interest. Make it count by reinforcing the message or offering a different angle that complements the first.
Think of these first two slides as setting the stage.
They should warm up your audience and set expectations.
The content should feel like a conversation with a friend.
Keep it natural and engaging to increase the likelihood that people will continue swiping.
Now, let's talk about maximising those 12 slides Instagram gives you.
Use. Them. All.
Here's why:
More slides = More scroll time
More scroll time = Better algorithm performance
Better algorithm performance = Higher chances of going viral
But it's not just about quantity.
Here's how to make those 12 slides count:
Tell a story: Each slide should naturally lead to the next. Create a narrative that viewers want to follow to the end.
Mix it up: Use photos, videos, text overlays, and graphics. Keep ‘em guessing.
Maintain visual appeal: Consistent colour schemes, high-quality images, and bold text. A consistent aesthetic that screams "This is my brand!"
Pro Tip: Tell 'Em to Swipe
Not everyone realises they're looking at a carousel.
So, don't be shy - tell them! Add a "Swipe left" or "More slides →" to your first image.
You've put in the work to create multiple slides, make sure people know to look for them.
